Tom Sawyer - By Mark Twain

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, written by Mark Twain, is an action filled classic. This book takes place in the early to mid 1800s along the banks of the Mississippi River. Throughout the story, the main character, Tom Sawyer, has lots of fun adventures with his two good friends, Huckleberry Finn and Joe Harper. Together, they run away from home to be pirates and discover a murderer. Something that comes up frequently in the story is the fact that the juvenile Tom has fallen in love with a girl by the name of Becky Thatcher. At many points in the story, you can see that Tom and Becky are trying to take love seriously, while they were only children. This can be quite comical and hilarious at some points. At first, I thought that this book would be good, but I expected it to be a book of peacefully classic adventure, as it is realistic, historical fiction. This book defied these expectations and turned out to be filled with comical action and exploration. Although the action of this book is not like that of mystery books or of fantasy, this book is an exciting voyage that all readers should venture to read.

True Grit - By Charles Portis

True Grit takes place in Fort Smith, Arkansas around 1900. Fourteen year-old Mattie Ross seeks revenge on the blood of her father, who was killed by a man named Tom Chaney, who also robbed him of his money and two gold pieces. Going to Fort Smith, hiring two brave officers to help her and traveling abroad,  searching for Tom Chaney and his followers (not to mention, in the dead of a cold, brittle winter) is only some of what this teenage cowgirl can do. Throughout the book Mattie Ross and the characters show what each of them possesses... true grit.

Girls Gone Green-By Lynn Hirshfield

Enter the world of eco-friendly tweens and teens in the U.S. who have raised awareness about being eco-friendly. This book includes interviews about being green with stars like Ellen Page, Shailene Woodley, Jessica Lowndes and what they do as eco-friendly activists. Even if you don't like documentaries or non-fiction, you should definitely reading this book because it's a fun, exciting way to learn about what others have done and what you can do to help our world become a healthier and safer place for everyone.
